Lost Tribe Sound
Lost Tribe Sound thumbnail
Lost Tribe Sound Intense, unrelenting drumming of the highest caliber. Recorded perfectly, without gimmicks, unnecessary instrumentation, or false narratives. This type of percussion has become my go to meditation. After time, my brain reaches a saturation point and the steady thump becomes my center, leaving little room for the typical worries. This should top the list on every percussive, rhythmic, drum type genre tag on Bandcamp. Obviously the genre tool needs some work.

about

Zincirli was recorded in one take in December 2020 in Cevdet’s home using a davul.

Zincir means chain or series/successions in Turkish, while zincirli means chained or locked. It takes its cue from the small ball chain fixed at the rim of one of the skins of the double-skinned drum. The performance in this recording is solely based on the dialogue between the bass skin that’s hit by a mallet and the other skin which is continuously moving in sympathy with it. The drum is rotated into different positions in order to control or liberate the movement of the chain in response to the second drum skin.

Since the 2017 Subtext release of Erek’s album “Davul” a series of performances occurred in contexts such as Berghain as part of CTM festival, in Hamburger Bahnhof Museum as part of Cevdet’s 2020 solo show “Bergama Stereo,” an ancient stadium amongst Messene in Greece’s Peloponnese region and underground venues in Istanbul. This recording was originally commissioned by Outernational for a concert that was supposed to take place in Berlin’s Radial System December 15th, 2020. The concert was cancelled due to the pandemic and the plan changed, becoming a streamed concert with pre-filmed and recorded performances.

Cevdet was commissioned to do a 6-8 minute piece but kept on playing for almost a half hour.

This performance that comprises Zincirli happened in the context of lockdown in Istanbul, while he and family were caring for his mother and mourning the loss of his father.

Observing how amongst the succession of indistinguishable days and nights his life force reacted to the repetition of routines and gestures, Cevdet sees parallels in how the small changes in the rotation of the drum amongst a regular beat created macroscopic changes of emotional expression while performing.

Zincirli is a study on moving in confined space while being fixed from one side to an essential and vital location.
